LOVE AND FEAR
Maurice Clifford

Just imagine rotating and looking back at yourself right between the eyes…  There you have it!

One reading on painting is as a kind of finite “front surface” of reality, infinity, implying of course that there is dimensionally something behind it. It feels somewhat like perceiving through the surface of reality. In the studio, every time I try and figure this out this conundrum it seems to have something to do with time.

This painting’s title is “LOVE and FEAR.” To me, these are the real opposites in our dualist existence.

A correspondence to love and fear can be seen in the written words actually residing in the painting: LIVE and EVIL, which when reflected in the mirror invert and become visually and metaphorically the other. This speaks to our dilemma in not discerning the fiction over the “real,” like when one eats the drawing of an apple.

I have recently made the observation that the past is as dynamic and mutable as the future; the present being that “front surface” from which our potential multiverses radiate.

Paintings can be those symbolic traces or trails illustrating and possibly informing the standing wave of the present… echoes of the past…evoking the future.
